Cellnex joins the SBTi initiative and “Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment”

  • The company undertakes to meet the Science Based Target (SBTi) emission reduction objectives to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5°C.
  • This initiative is promoted by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, World Wild Fund and We Mean Business.
  • The commitment is part of Cellnex’s Sustainability Plan approved in 2019
  • Over 700 companies and organisations worldwide have signed up to this global initiative

Barcelona, 2 December 2019. Cellnex Telecom has signed the commitment letter to the Science Based Target (SBT) initiative through which the telecommunications infrastructure operator sets its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals. The SBTi initiative, aligned with the Paris Agreement, aims to help set science-based strategies against climate change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The aim is to keep global temperature increases below 2°C compared to the pre-industrial era.

Cellnex’s commitment to this initiative is part of one of the strategic lines of the Company Sustainability Plan, oriented, among other objectives, to mitigating the impact that the company’s ordinary operations could have on climate change. In this connection, the company also signed the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” commitment, joining the world’s leading organisations committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Other sustainability actions by Cellnex involve calculating the certified carbon footprint – under ISO 14064 -, an emissions compensation programme or an investment analysis model based on the internal carbon price, inter alia.

SBT is a joint initiative by CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and involves over 700 companies worldwide. The aim is to increase companies’ commitment to sustainable management, as well as the search for more ambitious solutions to climate change.

Cellnex Telecom Sustainability Plan

Cellnex’s Sustainability Plan, to be performed over the next five years, rolls out the company’s global actions regarding its Sustainability policy in various fields (economic, social and environmental) and takes into account the expectations of its main stakeholders.

The Plan comprises 11 strategic lines which translate into concrete actions and are adapted to the activity and level of maturity of each business unit. To a greater or lesser extent depending on the activity concerned, each of these lines helps to achieve some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in 2015 by the United Nations in its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Cellnex’s Sustainability Plan is included in the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility Master Plan and is therefore part of the company’s strategy and its corporate culture and values.

The Corporate Responsibility (CR) Master Plan comprises all the ethical, environmental and social initiatives and sets commitments in accordance with internationally recognised standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, which Cellnex joined in 2015.

It is also part of the FTSE4GOOD and CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and “Standard Ethics” sustainability indexes.
